Professor JAMES D. DOUKETIS to be named Honorary Doctor of the School of Medicine of the School of Health Sciences

The Rector of the University of Thessaly Professor Georgios K. Petrakos and the Dean of the School of Medicine of the School of Health Sciences, Professor George M. Chatzigeorgiou, are organizing an event in honor of the Professor of McMaster University, Canada, Mr. JAMES D. DOUKETIS, in which he will be awarded a Honorary Doctorate of the School of Medicine of the School of Health Sciences.
The ceremony will take place at the Hippocrates Amphitheater in Viopolis, Larissa, on Thursday, March 22, 2018, at 19:30. During the event the Vice Rector of Research Professor Zisis D. MAMOURIS will adress a salutatory speech to Professor James D. Douketis. A salutatory speech will also be given by the Dean of the School of Health Sciences Professor Charalambos D. Bilinis. The Professor of Anaesthesiology of the School of Medicine of the School of Health Sciences Eleni M. ARNAUTOGLOU will grant Professor James D Douketis the award of Praise. The Dean of the School of Medicine, Professor George M. CHATZIGEORGIOU, will preside the reading and granting of the Honorary Doctorate to Professor JAMES D. DOUKETIS.
At the end of the event, the honoree will give a speech on "Clinical research: why it matters in 2018" .
Professor James Douketis is a Canadian, second-generation Greek, a doctor with a long academic career in teaching, research and clinical practice in thrombosis and antithrombotic therapy. His research interests include the development and writing of guidelines for various medical companies on the pre-operative management of anticoagulant and antiplatelet therapy as well as the prevention, treatment and prognosis of patients with venous thromboembolic diseases. He has more than 300 publications in internationally recognized scientific journals.
He received his medical degree and specialty in Pathology at the University of Toronto and then received a scholarship on Thrombosis at McMaster University. From 1998 up to now he holds academic positions at McMaster University, while his current position is Professor of Pathology at the same University, and works as a clinical practitioner at St. Joseph's Healthcare in Hamilton, Ontario. Dr. Douketis is President of the Thrombosis Society of Canada, editorial member of the Journal of Thrombosis and Haemostasis and Annals of Internal Medicine Journal, and an honorary member of the Institute for Study and Training in Thrombosis and Antithrombotic Care (IMETH). As a member of the Institute and a lover of Greece, he regularly visits our country, having trained Greek physicians of various specialties in thrombosis and antithrombotic therapy in recent years.

Mr. Douketis lives in Hamilton with his wife and his two children, and in his spare time he plays the cello at the Symphony-on-the Bay in which he is an active member.
