"Blockchain & Ballerina" Seminar by the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering

The Department of Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Thessaly conducts the seminar «Blockchain & Ballerina - A Workshop on Technologies for Next-Generation Applications» on Friday, June 22, 2018, at the Chamber of Commerce of Magnesia (176 Dimitriados Str., Volos).

The speakers of the seminar will be:
• Dr. Marta Piekarska (Director of Ecosystem at Hyperledger)
• Dr. Sanjiva Weerawarana (Founder, President and Chief Architect at WSO2 Foundation)
Hyperledger is a collaborative open source effort created to promote blockchain technologies across industries and businesses. It is a global partnership, which is hosted by Linux Foundation, which brings together leaders in the field of finance, banking, IoT, supply chain, construction and technology.

Ballerina is a generic programming language with written and graphical syntax. It specializes in integration – bringing fundamental concepts, ideas and integration tools of distributed systems to the level of language, providing a safe and concurrent environment for the implementation of applications. These applications include distributed transactions, reliable messaging, information flow processing, workflows and software management platforms.

The speakers

Ms. Marta Piekarska is the director of Ecosystem at Hyperledger. Marta is a Diploma holder of the Electrical and Computer Engineering Department of the Warsaw University of Technology and a dual Master holder in Computer Science and Information Technology in the Berlin Technical University and Warsaw University of Technology. She received a Ph.D. in "User-Informed Design of Privacy Tools" while working on one of Silicon Valley's most dynamic startups - Blockstream. Moreover, she also taught at the Polytechnic School of Berlin as a post-doctoral student. As part of her position in Hyperledger, Marta supports technology and Open Source in conferences around the world and helps businesses to implement Blockchains.
Mr. Sanjiva Weerawarana is founder, president and chief architect of WSO2, where he directs the design, architecture and development of Ballerina. Prior to the launch of WSO2, he was at IBM Research, where he undertook developing prototypes and technologies for Web services. He is a developer and open source supporter and a member of the Apache Software Foundation board member of the Open Source Initiative and founder and chief scientist of the Institute Lanka Software Foundation.  He is also a volunteer in the Sri Lankan army, where he serves as an IT consultant. He received his Ph.D. in Information Technology from the Purdue University in 1994.
