Washed-Up Sea Turtle Incident

On Sunday, October 28, 2018, a dead sea turtle (Caretta caretta), without obvious trauma, was washed-up in the Alikes sea area of ​​the Municipality of Volos. A team of the Department of Ichthyology and Aquatic Environment rushed to the area to assess the incident under the guidance of Associate Professor Anastasia Komninou (Veterinary School – Aristotle University of Thessaloniki and Rescue and Care Center for Marine Cetaceans - ARION). Mrs. Foteini Koutina and Mrs. Vaso Kotsi, members of the Arion Network of Veterinarians, in collaboration with Assistant Prof. Georgios Gafas (Department of Ichthyology & Aquatic Environment) conducted the autopsy and data collection for macroscopic and histological analysis to determine the cause of death.
