Higher Education project ALIEN

The Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering of the University of Thessaly coordinates the Erasmus+ Capacity Building for Higher Education project ALIEN: Active Learning in Engineering Education, which is funded by the European Commission. The aim of the research project is the upgrading of higher education at engineering schools in Asia. The project consortium includes 17 university partners, 12 of which are from Asia, and more specifically Malaysia, Vietnam, Nepal, Cambodia, and Pakistan; 5 from Europe, and more specifically from Portugal, Bulgaria, Estonia, United Kingdom, and Greece. Within the framework of the research programme an active learning methodology is developed for engineering schools. The proposed solution includes the creation of laboratories in Asian universities, the development of a digital platform for active learning, and the training of specialists for the integration of active learning as a basic methodology in higher education curricula. The 2nd Consortium meeting was held in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia on 9-11 January 2019 with the participation of the University of Malaya (Malaysia), University Tenaga Nacional (Malaysia), Kathmandu University (Nepal), Tribhuvan University (Nepal), ISRA University (Pakistan), National University of Computer and Emerging Sciences (Pakistan ), Mean Chey University (Cambodia), Institute of Technology Cambodia (Cambodia), University of Battambang (Cambodia), Hanoi University (Vietnam), Hanoi University of Science and Technology (Vietnam), Vietnam National University (Vietnam), University of Gabrovo (Bulgaria), Porto Polytechnic (Portugal), Tallinn University (Estonia), University of Central Lancashire (United Kingdom), and University of Thessaly. During the meeting, the partners of the research programme had the opportunity to collaborate in the design of learning services that combine the problem-central learning with technology. The proceedings of the meeting were officially commenced by the Vice Rector of the University of Malaya Prof. Dr. Kamila Ghazali and the Dean of the Faculty of Computer Science of the University of Malaya, Prof. Dr. Abrizah Abdullah. Scientific coordinator of the research program is Hon. Prof. Elias Houstis and organizing officer is Dr. Hariklia Tsalapatas.
