Survey of COST Action "Social Networks and Travel Behaviour"

You are invited to take part in a unique survey, aiming to obtain scientific knowledge about Social Media Networks of students in EU countries and understand their impact on social activities and travel.

This survey is part of work being developed in the European COST Action TU1305– Social Networks and Travel Behaviour. Identical surveys are carried out among university students of 20 other European countries.

The outcome of the survey will be presented at the Final Meeting of COST TU1305. As appreciation for your participation, a lottery will be held among participants who fully completed the questionnaire, with 4 prizes of “invitation to the final meeting in Milano on February 2018 during the carnival week (including travel and accommodation reimbursement). Those who are interested to be included in the lottery please write your email address on the last page of the survey (lottery outcomes will be published in August).

Educational Competition ‘Build your own seismograph’ for Junior High School / Senior High School Students

The School of “Ellinogermaniki Agogi” in cooperation with the Geodynamic Institute of the National Observatory of Athens organized the educational competition "Create your own seismograph" for junior high school / senior high school students. Student groups in collaboration with their teachers built an improvised seismograph and recorded the whole process in a presentation accompanied by photographic or other audiovisual material. School groups could submit their projects for evaluation by a group of scientists and educators until the 15th of April 2017.



Astro Pi Competition

TALOS team is based in the University of Thessaly and it includes graduates of Pedagogical Departments, IT and Networks Departments. Its activity began in 2015 by the Society for the Exploitation and Management of Property of the University of Thessaly and since the beginning of 2017 it is under the auspices of the School of Lifelong Learning, the Research Committee, the Society for the Exploitation and Management of Property and the Pedagogical Departments of the University of Thessaly.

The Astro Pi competition began in October 2016 and will end in May 2017 in three phases. The TALOS team qualified for the third and final phase of the competition. Initially, there were more than 600 robotics teams in the first phase, and 180 teams in the second phase. This distinction of the team is considered a very important success of the TALOS team. The data that will result from the experiments in space will be sent back to Earth and will be given to the teams until May 15th. In this way, students will have the opportunity to perform a series of programmed moves achieving useful results of accurate scientific knowledge and analyzing data collected in space. This specific experiment will be conducted in space by an astronaut of the International Space Station. As announced by the European Space Agency-ESA, five teams of Greek schools are included in the 45 winning teams selected to take part in the third phase of the first European Astro Pi competition. This is a very important distinction for the University of Thessaly, and especially for the action of TALOS - Educational Robotics and Programming as well as for the promotion of our city abroad. One of the supervisors of this program is the PhD candidate of the University of Thessaly George Proias.


European Master in Sport & Exercise Psychology

The European Master in Sport and Exercise Psychology, taught completely in English is a two-year full-time program at the School of Physical Education & Sport Science / University of Thessaly, at Trikala city/Greece, that offers educational opportunities for students of all nationalities.

“Like The Birds That Fly…” Anti-Racist Actions By The Students Of The Department Of Early Childhood Education

On Thursday March 23, 2017, students and educators of the Department of Early Childhood Education organize an anti-racist action under the title “Like the birds that fly…”.
On the occasion of the International Day Against Racism (21/3), the action focuses on supporting the refugees’ right to move without obstacles to the countries they want to go to. Besides the students and educators of our University, young people seeking asylum, immigrants, members of minority groups, and many others also participate in the action. Apart from the aforementioned action, from 20/3/17 to 4/4/17 students from the Department of Early Childhood Education will organize a daily radio broadcast in the local radio station (ERA Volos) concerning the rights of minority groups, and the fight against racism, advocating diversity, democracy and social justice.

European Master Program in Sport and Exercise Psychology

The University of Thessaly kindly invites you to our 2nd Erasmus Staff Week from the 3rd to the 7th of April 2017 in Volos, Greece. We will be happy to host a maximum of 25 participants. We highly encourage the staff interested in visiting the UTH and getting acquainted with the way it is run as a public university to do so within this Erasmus Staff Training Week. Unfortunately, we won’t be able to receive staff apart from those in the Erasmus+ Exchange Programme. In the selection process, priority will be given to partner universities.
We consider it an excellent opportunity to share our knowledge and experience in the field of mobility, promote the idea of internationalization and strengthen our international partnerships through meeting in person.
Our staff week has no registration fee. However, participants are expected to cover their own travel and living expenses through the Erasmus fund for staff mobility or otherwise. All participants will be asked to make a short presentation (video, PowerPoint etc.) about their University. Confirmation of those selected and non-selected will be sent to all participants by e-mail after the 10th of February 2017. Information about accommodation and the final programme will be sent only to selected participants.

European Master Program in Sport and Exercise Psychology

The period of applications to the European Master Program in Sport and Exercise Psychology at the University of Thessaly is now open until 27th May.
This is a 2-year program at the University of Thessaly on Sport and Exercise Psychology. The University of Thessaly will award double degree in collaboration with the University of Jyvaskyla, to students who will complete successfully a minimum of 30 ECTS (one semester) at the University of Jyvaskyla, Finland. Students may also chose to complete part of their studies in other European universities collaborating with the University of Thessaly in the framework of the European Erasmus+ program.

- A letter of intent, explaining why you want to study in this program.
- Your Curriculum Vitae.
- Your university degrees (with official translation in English language if required). Current students expecting to graduate until summer might provide an official letter from their university confirming that they finished all requirements to obtain their degree.
- For graduates from non-English speaking universities: A proof of your proficiency in English language. Applicants will be also invited to participate in an online interview in the 2nd or 3rd week of June.
International or European applicants submitting their application earlier than 15th May will receive feedback from us. This might help them to present better themselves in the interview process or to provide supplementary documents if required.

Important distinction for the Department of Civil Engineering: research funding through European Program HORIZON 2020.

The Department of Civil Engineering participated in a research proposal for the extremely competitive program HORIZON 2020, for research on the Topic Water-2b: Integrated approaches to food security, low-carbon energy, sustainable water management and climate change mitigation. A total of 59 proposals were submitted on the Topic and only 2 were selected for funding (success rate of 3%). The proposal submitted by the University of Thessaly with principal investigator the Assoc. Professor Chrysi Laspidou and acronym SIM4NEXUS was one of the two proposals that were selected for funding and focuses on the NEXUS of water-land-food-energy-climate under the influence of climate change. The total budget for the project is 8 million euros and the duration is 4 years.
